Probably one of the most popular attractions in Luang Prabang, Kuang Si Falls easily lived up to the hype when we visited. After even just a glimpse of the lowest pool, we were completely in awe of the gorgeous turquoise color of the water.
As we walked through the jungle to the top, we grew more and more amazed at the amount of multi-tiered waterfalls and layers upon layers of pools – they seemed to never end! Finally we reached the main waterfall, which cascades 200 feet out of the lush jungle into the blue pool below.
The color is caused by spring water flowing over limestone that is rich with calcium carbonate, which turns it into a brilliant turquoise color that is simply stunning against the greenery of the forest.
Not only is the water beautiful, but it’s incredibly revitalizing as well. In a country where you seem to be constantly dripping with sweat, the pools are refreshingly crisp and provide a great way to cool off. There’s a rope swing for those who like action and many grassy picnic areas for those who prefer to just sit back and relax.
Included in the entry ticket to Kuang Si, you also gain admittance to the Tat Kuang Si Black Bear Rescue Centre, which rescues bears from illegal poachers and trading. This was fascinating to visit, as the bear cubs all started to play as soon as we arrived, and it seemed as if they may have been putting on a show for us. We all agreed we could have stayed and watched them for hours!
Overall Kuang Si Falls was by far the most beautiful setting I’ve seen so far in Laos, and a definite must-see if you ever visit Luang Prabang. I could go on and on about how breathtaking it is, but I’ll let the photos speak for themselves:
As always, keep on livin’ pura vida ✌
