A few days ago I went on the Twilight Safari cruise with Bay of Islands Kayak Cruises, and I truly cannot speak highly enough of this tour. They picked us up from our accommodation in Paihia and drove us out to the dock, where we hopped on a boat that the owner, Taylor, had built up from almost nothing. Taylor drove us up the river, providing us interesting and informative facts about the Waitangi River and Bay of Islands, and you could tell that he started the business because he truly loved it.
We stopped about halfway up the river and got into kayaks, paddling the rest of the way up the river to Haruru Falls. While the river part had been peaceful and relaxing, the waterfall is where the real fun started. We spent the next half an hour frolicking in the waterfalls, with the guys pushing us through them while we tried to balance in our kayaks as the heavy water poured down and drenched us. So much fun! There was also a tree you could jump off into the river, or you could climb out and walk behind the falls, which looked pretty cool.
Overall, the tour was great fun and was run by some of the nicest and most helpful people I’ve ever met. At only $58 for an evening cruise in summer, it’s very affordable compared to most New Zealand tours, which are known to be fairly pricey. They also take heaps of photos and sell CDs for a mere $10, whereas many tours I’ve been on have charged up to $40. Another plus for me was that it’s a family-owned business instead of a huge corporation, and the owners truly care that you have an enjoyable time.
While my video below won’t stand as a substitute for being there, hopefully it’ll provide a taste of what the experience was like.
